A man named Emmanuel Etim poured petrol over his mother and set her on fire, reportedly due to accusations of witchcraft in Cross River State.
The event took place on Friday, August 14, 2026, in Ojuah, Akamkpa Local Government Area.
It was reported that Etim had tried to strangle his mother, Mrs.
Atim Eyo, before setting her on fire after blaming her for the death of his daughter, which was considered a case of witchcraft.
According to the information, Etim arrived at his mother’s home after his daughter’s death earlier that day.
He reportedly confronted his mother, accusing her of causing the child’s death and demanding to know what she had done to him.
The situation worsened when Etim stood up from his chair and tried to strangle his mother.
As the victim called for help, one of her daughters stepped in and fought with Etim, making him let go of their mother.
Once free, the victim tried to run away.
However, Etim poured petrol on her and set her on fire.
Witnesses who saw the incident quickly stepped in to extinguish the flames and then rushed the victim to a hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses stated that the incident has been reported to the police in Akamkpa.
However, Emmanuel Etim and members of his family are still at large as of the time of this report.
The circumstances surrounding the death of Etim’s daughter, which is said to have led to the attack, are not known.
