An operations staff member of MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has died following an electric shock while performing maintenance work in Eke, located in the Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The incident occurred around 1 pm on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at a 50kVA/11kV pole-mounted distribution substation in Eke.
The deceased, identified by MEDL as Mr Samson Okechi, was a Team Lead in the Abor department and was attached to the company’s 9th Mile District.
The company’s Head of Communications, Emeka Ezeh, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Monday night, August 17.
He stated that Okechi was performing maintenance work on the distribution substation when he suffered the fatal electric shock.
Okechi was immediately taken to Our Saviour Hospital, Ngwo, for medical assistance.
However, the doctor on duty declared him dead, after which his body was placed at a mortuary.
Ezeh mentioned that the incident was reported at the Ngwo Police Station for official documentation and legal procedures.
The company has refuted claims circulating on social media that suggested Okechi had been murdered or that the incident was related to sabotage.
He expressed concern about the spread of such false information, saying, “I wonder why some people take pleasure in spreading unfounded stories, creating unnecessary tension and bad feelings.
This is so unfair.”
He urged the public to ignore these claims, calling them baseless.
Ezeh explained that Okechi had previously requested a Station Guarantee (SG) for the Okwe 11kV Feeder, which was granted at approximately 11:06 am at the 9th Mile Injection Substation.
According to him, the feeder was then opened and tagged before the maintenance operation commenced.
He described the incident as a very unfortunate event and a major blow to all colleagues.
He expressed his condolences to Okechi’s immediate family as they mourn his loss.
The company has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the death.
Ezeh stated that the investigation will look into the immediate, underlying, and root causes of the accident.
He added, “We are committed to ensuring that the investigation is thorough and based on evidence.
The findings will help us identify any gaps, determine necessary corrective measures, and improve safety procedures and operational controls where required.”
