Sixteen people were killed by armed invaders in the Efeyo community, located in the Ugboju district of Otukpo Local Government Area in Benue State.They were buried in a mass funeral, which took place amid emotional displays of grief.
The victims were killed on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, when armed attackers invaded the community around 5 a.m.
and opened fire on residents in the area.
During the mass burial held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, relatives of the victims, community leaders, traditional rulers, politicians, and religious figures gathered to pay their final respects.
Many among them could not control their emotions and wept uncontrollably.
According to Daily Trust, numerous mourners found it difficult to suppress their tears as the victims were laid to rest in graves dug side by side.
A local resident, Ogboji Aboje, who attended the funeral, described the event as one of the saddest moments in the history of Efeyi.
“The funeral was very touching.
The atmosphere was filled with sorrow.Tears were flowing.It was the saddest day for the people of Efeyi community.May their souls rest in peace,” he said.
Before the bodies, placed in white caskets, were lowered into their graves, a Catholic priest offered prayers for the deceased.
