Nigerian comedian AY Makun opens up on why he stopped going to church

Nigerian comedian AY Makun shared the reason behind his decision to stop attending church for a while, explaining that it was not due to a loss of faith in God, but because he was going through a personal period after some negative stories about him spread online.

AY mentioned that he felt uneasy with the possibility of being judged or facing criticism when he entered a church, so he chose to worship online at times.

He later joined another church where he felt accepted and believed he had found a sense of belonging.

However, he was later removed from a planned event after concerns were raised about how the public viewed him.

This experience made him think about whether public opinion had become more significant than a person's connection with God.

AY clarified that he was not criticizing pastors or urging people to ignore their beliefs about him.

Instead, he asked whether the church should not be a place where truth, grace, and restoration are available, no matter what challenges someone is facing.

He emphasized that he still believes in Jesus Christ as a Christian and referenced Matthew 11:28, then asked: “Who is the church really for?”
