Mexican drug lord Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, aged 76, was given a life sentence in prison on Monday, July 20, by a federal court in New York.This sentence was handed down for his role in starting and leading the strong Sinaloa cartel.
"El Mayo" was previously a key person in the organization founded by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who is currently serving a life sentence in a maximum-security prison in Colorado.
Zambada was arrested at a US airport in July 2024 and admitted guilt in August 2025 for multiple charges connected to his leadership within the criminal group.
He stated that he was misled by a fellow cartel member into getting on a plane, which led to his capture by US authorities.
As part of his plea deal, US authorities chose not to pursue the death penalty against him.
A statement from the Justice Department mentioned that US District Judge Brian Cogan sentenced Zambada to life in prison at the federal court in Brooklyn, with no chance of parole, due to his role as a major leader of a "continuing criminal enterprise" and for racketeering offenses.
According to US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Joseph Nocella, Jr., Ismael Zambada Garcia spent almost four decades harming American communities to make huge profits and ordering the killing of anyone who opposed him.
He said, "Today, that chapter closes for good."
Zambada was known for staying out of the public eye and rarely being photographed.
