Five family members who went hiking were killed after a flash flood hit the canyons of southern Utah on Friday, July 17, according to law enforcement.
The victims included a fire department captain from Provo, Utah, his wife, and their three sons, Reid, Thayne, and Gage.
A daughter who was not with the group survived the incident.
The family arrived at Sunglow Campground in a red rock canyon near Bicknell, Utah, on Friday for their day trip, as stated by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office noted in a news release that the family likely perished due to flooding caused by heavy rains.
Though the sheriff's office did not name the victims, the Provo Fire Department confirmed on social media that a fire captain named Spencer Long and his family members were killed.
The fire department expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating in a post, "We are absolutely heartbroken by the death of Captain Spencer Long and his family.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time."
The fire department also updated its Facebook profile photo to show the agency's badge with a black bar, indicating the death of a member.
Later that night, deputies were called to the campground after a young male body was discovered in the flood wash.
The bodies of the other family members were recovered on Friday, July 17, and Saturday, July 18.
A GoFundMe page has been created by a family friend to help the Longs' daughter as she deals with the loss of her entire family.
The fundraising page states, "Our Provo Fire family is heartbroken to lose Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina, and their three sons Reid, Thayne, and Gage due to a devastating flash flood Thursday evening." It adds, "In an instant, their daughter Lydia lost the people she loved most and is now facing an unimaginable future without them."
