Operatives from the Delta State Police Command have arrested a woman, known only as Joy, for allegedly stealing two infants. The suspect is said to have planned the abductions to replace her deceased twins and stop her partner from leaving her.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, shared the details while presenting the suspect in court.
In a video released online, Edafe explained that Joy targeted local traders by pretending to be a customer. According to initial police findings, she first took a four-month-old infant from a woman selling groundnuts and later abducted a second baby from a woman selling ticketing stubs.
During her interrogation, Joy admitted to the crimes, citing difficulties in her relationship with her partner.
She stated he had previously left her due to repeated miscarriages. Although she later gave birth to twins—a boy and a girl—the children sadly passed away six weeks after birth.
Terrified that the loss would end her relationship, Joy kept the tragedy a secret from her partner.
She claimed she acted quickly because he was already planning a significant child dedication ceremony for the upcoming Sunday. She decided to take the two infants and pretend they were her surviving twins.
The plan was uncovered after the mothers of the abducted children independently reported the disappearances to the police.
Following a thorough investigation and quick tracking efforts, law enforcement officers found the suspect, saved the babies, and took Joy into custody.
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed that legal proceedings are continuing.
