A 27-year-old South African woman briefly appeared in court on charges of murdering her two young children after reportedly giving them a poisonous substance at their family home.
Ntanganedzeni Siphugu made a short appearance before the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, where she was charged with two counts of murder following the deaths of her children, who were six and nine years old.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi, the alleged incident took place on June 1, 2026, at Madabani Village in Limpopo.
Malabi stated that prosecutors claim Siphugu gave the two children a poisonous substance, which caused both children to become seriously ill.
The children became ill the day after the alleged poisoning.
One of the children was taken to a nearby clinic for treatment but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Family members later returned home from the clinic and found that the second child had also died.
The deaths led to a police investigation, which eventually resulted in Siphugu's arrest.
Authorities then charged her with two counts of murder.
The case was presented before the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate's Court, where the proceedings were postponed to June 12, 2026, to allow for a formal bail application.
Meanwhile, Siphugu remains in custody while awaiting the outcome of those proceedings.
