Two men arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) have been sentenced to death by an Ekiti State High Court after being found guilty of kidnapping a staff member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The two kidnappers, Ibrahim Abubakar and Abdullahi Abubakar, were convicted and received the death penalty.
However, the third defendant, Usman Abubakar, was released because the court found that there was not enough evidence to connect him to the crime.
The case relates to the abduction of Omoboade Adesina, a female NYSC staff member, which occurred on April 22, 2022.
Both convicts were later arrested and brought to trial by the DSS.
In delivering the judgment, the Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Lekan Ogunmoye, sentenced the two defendants to death by hanging, while dismissing the third defendant.
The Chief Judge praised the thorough work of the DSS prosecutors in proving the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
He specifically pointed out that the identification parade conducted by the Service and the analysis of call data records during the investigation were crucial in securing the conviction.
This conviction represents another significant win for the DSS in court.
This follows a death sentence given by a Sokoto High Court to three men convicted of terrorism and cross-border arms dealing, as well as the conviction of a kidnapper in Kogi State, which was also achieved by the Service, among other successes.
