30 Students, Teacher Hospitalised After Gas Leak at Ogun School

At least 30 scholars and one schoolteacher have been hospitalised following a gas leak at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The incident passed shortly after the academy assembly on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

It was gathered that the leak caused fear as a gassy substance spread across the demesne, leaving scholars and staff floundering to breathe.

Sources told Punch that several scholars collapsed after gobbling the substance, egging an exigency response.

The affected scholars and the schoolteacher were incontinently rushed to the General Hospital, Ijebu Ode, for treatment.

While some sources originally suspected that the incident might have been caused by a near gas explosion, others linked it to a chemical odour from the academy laboratory during a practical session.

It was gathered that a piece of outfit may have fallen during the exercise, releasing a substance that spread across the academy.

still, the Vice star( Junior School), Mrs Adeola Borogun, speaking to journalists on Wednesday, dismissed reports of an explosion, describing the incident as a strange chemical smell within the demesne.

He said the situation led to puking and conking among scholars, forcing the academy to call for ambulances.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, also described the situation as a gas leak but ruled out the possibility of an explosion or artificial pollution.

" Some say it was from the academy laboratory, but some say it must have been from nearly around the community.

“ We're bringing a gas analyser there now to assay the type of gas and the attention zone. So, that will give us the exact cause, ” Oresanya said.

Oresanya added that there were no artificial installations in the area able of causing similar pollution.

“ There's no artificial gas around, so we know it’s not artificial pollution.

“ No, there's no explosion anywhere. It’s a gas leakage from nearly. No explosion, 30 scholars were brought to the sanitarium, but they're in stable condition now. They're veritably okay now, ” Oresanya said.

attesting the development, the Chief Medical Director of the General Hospital, Ijebu Ode, Dr Banjo Adeoye, said 30 scholars and one schoolteacher were brought to the installation.

He added that utmost of the affected persons were in stable condition, although the exact substance responsible had yet to be linked.

Also attesting the incident, the Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government, Dare Alebiosu, said no life
was lost and that all affected scholars were responding to treatment..
