The Federal Executive Council( FEC), presided over by President Bola Tinubu has approved the obliteration of Carter Bridge in Lagos and its reconstruction with over N5billion.
Minister of Works, David Umahi bared this on Wednesday, March 4.
Umahi verified that the President also approved several major road systems across the country.
Umahi noted that six major systems entered blessing.
Among those approved by the council includes the completion of the Suleja- Minna Road, which had before been awarded to Salini Construction Company but latterly terminated due to poor performance.
According to him, only about 10 kilometres of the design had been executed before the contract was cancelled.
Umahi explained that after reviewing the design, the government resolved to complete the remaining 71 kilometres binary expressway, adding that one expressway has now been awarded to China Geo- Engineering Corporation( CGC) at a cost of N91 billion, while the alternate expressway has also entered Bureau of Public Procurement( BPP) concurrence.
He said President Tinubu directed that the road be constructed using corroborated concrete to insure continuity.
The minister further blazoned that FEC approved N 5.6 billion for the design and going of a new Carter Bridge design in Lagos, explaining that the being ground can no longer be rehabilitated.
He verified that government would demolish the current structure and construct a new one grounded on recommendations from specialized assessments.
“ The stakeholders’ engagement and specialized reviews showed that the Carter Bridge can no longer be rehabilitated. It has to be demolished and a fully new ground constructed, ” Umahi said.
He added that Advanced Engineering Consultants was engaged to carry out the full design and cost evaluation ahead of the procurement process for construction.
On another design, Umahi said FEC approved the review and rescoping of the Kano- Kongolam Road, a duty credit design firstly awarded in 2022.
The design, which covers 132 kilometres across Kano, Jigawa and Katsina countries, was originally planned as an asphalt road but has now been redesigned as a three- lane concrete expressway with solar- powered streetlights and CCTV installations to address security enterprises.
The revised design is estimated to bring N334 billion.
