The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control( NAFDAC) has denied reports claiming it has intimately banned the antibiotic, Amoxicillin, in Nigeria.
In a public notice participated on its social media handles on Monday, February 9, NAFDAC stated that the claim is entirely false. The agency clarified that while it routinely issues targeted safety cautions and recalls for specific unacceptable or affected batches of drugs, there's no mask ban on Amoxicillin.
“ NAFDAC has not banned Amoxicillin in Nigeria, either intimately or openly. As a responsible nonsupervisory authority, the Agency intimately notifies Nigerians of any nonsupervisory conduct through sanctioned channels, ” the statement read.
The agency emphasised that its safety dispatches, including Recalls, Safety cautions, and Blacklists, give details on specific product names, batch figures, manufacturers, and necessary conduct to cover cases and healthcare providers. Blacklisting, where applicable, targets companies for safety enterprises, nonsupervisory violations, or unethical practices and not entire medicine orders.
NAFDAC cited recent targeted cautions for specific Amoxicillin products In August 2025, Public Alert No. 24/2025 recalled Amoxivue 500 mg capsules due to low active pharmaceutical component( API) content.
In October 2025, Public Alerts Nos. 34 and 35 addressed unacceptable batches of Astamocil, Astamentin, Annmox, and Jawamox dormancies.
“ These conduct were specific to linked products and do n't constitute a ban on Amoxicillin, ” the agency added, prompting the public, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders to calculate only on vindicated updates from sanctioned NAFDAC channels.
