Man jailed for insulting Zimbabwean president during dispute over toilet

A 29- time-old Harare seller has been released on bail after spending nearly two months in guardianship following a disagreement over the condition of public toilets at Mbare machine boundary that allegedly escalated into reflections interpreted as insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe.

The release was verified on Tuesday, 10 February 2026, by Zimbabwe attorneys for Human Rights( ZLHR), which said the High Court ordered the seller’s freedom after he'd been detained since early December 2025.

According to ZLHR, Anashe Mundandi was arrested on 1 December 2025 at Mbare machine boundary following a verbal altercation with a City of Harare hand responsible for drawing the public installations.

“ We've secured freedom for a seller, who had been sagging in captivity for further than two months after he was arrested by Zimbabwe Republic Police( ZRP) officers and charged with felonious nuisance following a verbal altercation over the unprintable state of toilets in Mbare, ” ZLHR said in a statement

Prosecutors contended that Mundandi cried at Ody Chikombo, a external worker, criminating him of failing to carry out his duties duly and suggesting that others could do a better job.

The State further claimed that during the exchange, Mundandi made reflections that were interpreted as affronting the President. In court, prosecutors argued that Mundandi “ acted unlawfully in a manner probably to intrude with the ordinary comfort, convenience, peace or quiet of the public. ”

The case has drawn attention to Zimbabwe’s bail practices and captivity traffic, with rights groups pressing the length of time the seller remained in guardianship before the High Court interposed. With bail now granted, the matter is anticipated to do through the courts.
