The National Environmental norms and Regulations Enforcement Agency says Nigeria consumes over 2.5 billion litres of sachet water annually, produced by further than 32,000 manufacturers across the country.
Innocent Barikor, the Director- General of NESREA, stated this at the commencement meeting of the Child design – GEF 11193 on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said the design “ indirect results to Plastic Pollution in Nigeria ” was aimed at reducing plastic sachet water consumption, while icing access to safe drinking water.
Barikor said the meeting marked a significant corner in Nigeria’s ongoing sweats to address the growing challenge of plastic pollution in the country.
He said the pervasive issue of single- use plastic water sachets had come both a convenience and an environmental burden.
” Your presence then moment reflects our combined commitment to chancing sustainable, innovative, and practical results to this critical environmental challenge.
“ As you're apprehensive, Nigeria consumes over 2.5 billion litres of sachet water annually, produced by further than 32,000 manufacturers across the country.
” While this has helped ground gaps in access to drinking water, it has also redounded in severe environmental consequences.
“ These include blocked drainage systems, flooding, declination of ecosystems, and pitfalls to public health and biodiversity.
“ This binary challenge of water access and plastic pollution makes this design not just timely, but necessary, ” he said.
Barikor explained that the Global Environment Facility( GEF) Child Project 11193 represented a strategic and transformative intervention to address the issue of waste operation in the country.
” It aligns with Nigeria’s public environmental precedences and NESREA’s accreditation to cover and save our terrain for present and unborn generations.
” The design adopts a holistic, indirect approach — fastening not only on waste operation, but on forestallment, invention, policy reform, and systemic change, ” he said.
In a Goodwill communication, Isabella Vanderbeck, of the United Nations Environment Programme( UNEP), said that Nigeria is a crucial mate in the sweats to reduce plastic pollution in the country.
” Life without plastic is truly fantastic, let us hit the ground, let us do down with plastic, ” Vanderbeck said.
Also speaking, Evelyn Swain of GEF paraphrased the organisation s commitment to mate with Nigeria to reduce the consumption of single- use plastic water sachets in the country.
” GEF is proud to support Nigeria in its trip to reduce the consumption of single- use plastic water sachets in Nigeria, while icing accessible and safe drinking water.
“ GEF sees Nigeria not only as a party in this Integrated Programme, but also as a leader whose experience can help shape global results to plastic pollution, ” she said.
Swain is a elderly Environmental Specialist and Plastic Reboot fellow at GEF Secretariat, represented by Anna Blanpain.
Mrs Zuliat Mohammed, Chief Scientific Officer, Federal Ministry of Water coffers and Sanitation, expressed the readiness of the ministry to unite with NESREA for the success of the design.
“ This programme will help Nigeria exclude all these plastic products in the country, ” she said.
