President of theNon-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, Dr. Hassan Makolo has issued a dire warning about the profitable difficulty facing Nigerian workers.
He lamented that numerous are" suffocating" under the crushing pressure of affectation, repeated energy price hikes, and the patient devaluation of the naira.
Speaking on the sidelines of the union’s National Executive Council( NEC) meeting, Dr. Makolo painted a grim picture of diurnal struggles, noting that the soaring prices of essential goods and services have pushed millions of families to the point of despair.
He stated, “ Workers are suffocating under the high cost of living. The prices of food, transport, casing, and indeed healthcare are now beyond reach. ”
“ Our stipend no longer reflect the realities of moment’s frugality. Affectation has wiped out the value of hires, leaving numerous workers unfit to meet introductory requirements. The situation is indeed worse for workers in some countries who continue to admit reattached or irregular hires. ”
Makolo argued that the government must move beyond the traditional minimal pay envelope structure to apply a living pay envelope policy. This policy, he said, must acclimate periodically to affectation and cost- of- living indicators, icing that workers can live and work with quality.
The NASU President stressed that Nigeria’s persistently high affectation rate, rising energy costs, and the significant devaluation of the naira following exchange rate junction have oppressively eroded the real value of workers’ stipend. This has pushed the cost of living far beyond the reach of the average Nigerian.
As Organised Labour, we must consolidate our collaborative advocacy for fair pay envelope adaptations, stronger social protection programs, and responsibility in profitable operation, ” he stressed. “ Together, we will continue to defend the quality and weal of every worker in these grueling times. ”
He prompted the government to strengthen profitable programs that will stabilize prices, invest in original product, and ameliorate transport and energy structure to reduce costs and ease the burden on citizens.
The union leader also drew attention to the precarious future facing youthful people, graduates, and professed professionals due to rising severance and underemployment. He noted that the informal sector now dominates the employment request, absorbing nearly 80 percent of workers, utmost of whom operate under precarious and limited conditions.
Makolo called for the government to concentrate on job creation through expanded vocational training, support for Small and Medium- sized Enterprises( SMEs), and increased investment in labor- ferocious diligence.
On security, he lamented that “ Instability, from hijackings , banditry to terrorism, threatens Nigerians, including workers’ lives and livelihoods, as well as every other person occupant in the country. ” He concluded that addressing instability requires a comprehensive,multi-dimensional approach, including strengthening intelligence gathering, planting ultramodern technology, icing political will, barring corruption in security spending, and addressing youth severance.
