The heartbreaking incident occurred on Saturday, July 12, and ended in tragedy in the early hours of Monday morning, despite medical efforts to save his life. According to Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the deceased, identified as Thabiso Ndlovu, took the toxic substance shortly after the altercation.
“The dispute started when the mother reprimanded her son for accidentally spilling two litres of cooking oil,” said Inspector Msebele. “Unfortunately, the situation escalated, leading to this tragic outcome.”
After consuming the poison, Ndlovu reportedly began vomiting and admitted to his mother that he had taken the substance. He was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he received emergency treatment, but sadly passed away around 5:40 a.m. on Monday.
In the wake of the incident, Inspector Msebele urged families to adopt peaceful conflict-resolution strategies and to seek mental health support when dealing with emotional challenges.
“We urge families to communicate openly and make use of available counseling services. Suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems,” she said.
Authorities also reaffirmed their dedication to improving mental health awareness and support services within the community, encouraging residents to reach out during times of crisis.
