Emergency services were called to Rawtenstall Cemetery on Burnley Road around 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, following reports of the incident. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lancashire Police confirmed that the boy’s death is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be submitted to HM Coroner for further investigation.
A police spokesperson said:
"Tragically, and despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the boy sadly died. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this devastating time."
Rawtenstall Cemetery, which spans approximately 17 acres, serves various faiths including Catholic, Church of England, Non-Conformist, and Muslim communities, and contains more than 21,000 burial plots.
