In a video message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Achimugu emphasized that airlines are legally obligated to compensate passengers when their checked baggage fails to arrive on schedule— a provision many Nigerian travelers remain unaware of.
"Hello, air travelers. I'm Michael Achimugu, Director of Consumer Protection at NCAA. If your luggage doesn't arrive:
— For domestic flights, you're entitled to ₦10,000 immediate compensation.
— For international flights, you are entitled to over $100, and up to $170 if the airline fails to comply with NCAA regulations.
Always demand your compensation. Also, ensure you arrive early for check-in and boarding. Never be late. Thank you."
The NCAA is urging passengers to assert their rights and hold airlines accountable when standards are not met. The announcement is part of the agency’s broader push to improve transparency and consumer protection in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
