Mr. Adewole is accused of assaulting the teenager in his car on November 1, 2024, near Heaven, a popular gay nightclub in London. The complainant, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, is described as a Christian who was saving herself for marriage. The court was told she appeared visibly intoxicated and stumbling, and jurors were reminded that intoxication can impair the ability to give valid consent.
Jurors were also informed that Mr. Adewole was residing in the UK on a five-year tourist visa, which did not permit him to work or stay longer than six months at a time. It was alleged that he would travel back to Nigeria upon each visa expiration.
At the time of his arrest, Mr. Adewole, of Dartford, Kent, provided police with a false identity — Olusola Julius Alabi, the name under which he was employed as a security guard at Heaven. Authorities later confirmed his true identity through fingerprint analysis. He has since pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing identification documents with improper intent.
In his court testimony, Mr. Adewole admitted to using a false ID to gain employment, saying he needed to “make a living” and support his partner by paying rent. He told the court he initially came to the UK on vacation but later sought work.
Explaining why he gave officers a fake name upon arrest, he said: “I was panicking — that’s the name people call me at work.”
The defendant claimed he had previously met the complainant at the club and that she had greeted him warmly on the night of the alleged incident, calling him “handsome” and kissing him. He added that flirtatious interactions from club-goers were not unusual in his line of work.
According to his account, when the woman asked for water, he offered some from his car as he was unable to leave his post to fetch any from inside the club. He said he then took a break and walked with the complainant and her friend to his car, where he gave them water.
Mr. Adewole further claimed the complainant needed to use the toilet and led him to a nearby tunnel, where she allegedly expressed concerns about theft in the area and asked him to accompany her. CCTV footage reportedly shows the two in the tunnel, where Adewole claimed they kissed.
He alleged the woman expressed a desire for sex, which he declined at that location. He said he then drove her to Adelphi Terrace, where the alleged assault took place in his parked car. He denied raping the woman, stating that while there was some sexual contact, it did not involve penetration.
Mr. Adewole also told the court that the complainant initially claimed to be 25 years old but later said she was 19, prompting him to stop any activity. “I can’t date someone below 25,” he said.
The trial is ongoing.
