A police inspector, Christian Gbaratee, was killed after gunmen ambushed a team of officers along the Port Harcourt–Aba Road in Rivers State.
The incident, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, was revealed by counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama via his X handle on Thursday, May 8. Citing police sources, Makama said the officers were returning from a trip when they were attacked by five armed assailants dressed in combat attire.
According to the report, the ambush happened on a narrow stretch of road near a filling station in Asa. During the confrontation, Inspector Gbaratee was fatally shot, while another officer, Inspector Ekoro Isong, was initially declared missing. The assailants also stole Gbaratee’s service weapon and freed a suspect who was in police custody at the time.
Makama noted that a prompt police response led to the recovery of a Toyota Corolla used during the ambush, along with expended ammunition, a laptop, and three travel bags.
Inspector Isong was later found unharmed, while Gbaratee’s remains have been deposited at the Euro Allied Medical Centre Mortuary for autopsy.
A joint search operation involving the police and military is currently underway to apprehend the attackers and recover the stolen firearm.
