The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the widower of late gospel singer Osinachi, to death by hanging for her murder. The court found Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide, ruling that he caused Osinachi's death on April 8, 2022.
Nwachukwu was arraigned on 23 charges, including culpable homicide, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, and spousal battery. The prosecution presented 17 witnesses and 25 documents as evidence, while the defense called five witnesses and tendered four exhibits.
Before sentencing, the defense lawyer pleaded for leniency, but the prosecution urged the court to apply the law. The judge sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging for culpable homicide and imposed additional prison sentences and fines for other charges.
Osinachi's death sparked widespread outrage, with many accusing Nwachukwu of subjecting her to domestic violence. The singer's family and friends revealed a history of abuse in their relationship, contradicting Nwachukwu's claims that she died from lung cancer and denying allegations of violence.
