A Utah mother of three has appeared in court charged with murdering her husband, despite the fact that his body remains undiscovered.
Jennifer Gledhill, 42, is accused of shooting her 51-year-old husband, Matthew Johnson, in their Cottonwood Heights home in late September. Police reports indicate the alleged murder followed a night of drinking and sex during which Gledhill confessed to an extramarital affair.
The accusations surfaced after a man, claiming to have had an affair with Gledhill, informed police that she had confessed to the killing.
According to a statement from Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill, Gledhill allegedly told this informant that she shot Johnson as he slept, then placed his body in a rooftop storage container, moved it downstairs, and loaded it into their minivan. She then allegedly drove north and buried the body in a shallow grave.
Prosecutors believe Gledhill also destroyed Johnson's phone, moved his truck, and thoroughly cleaned her own car, actions that were reportedly captured on CCTV. GPS data from her phone reportedly corroborated the location of the abandoned truck. Despite these leads, investigators have yet to find Johnson's body.
The informant also provided authorities with text message screenshots and phone recordings, and reportedly told police he saw bruises on Gledhill's body, which she allegedly attributed to moving her husband's body and cleaning the house. A neighbor also reported seeing Gledhill's parents helping her clean the house late into the night.
Court records indicate the couple was involved in a contentious divorce and custody battle over their three children, ages 11, 7, and 5. Gledhill is scheduled to return to court later this month.
