Ukrainian drones launched a series of attacks on Russian targets early Monday, February 3, including the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka oil refinery in the Volgograd region.
The refinery, one of Russia's top 10 by production, suffered local fires after drone debris fell on the site, but they were quickly contained and no casualties were reported.
This is the second attack on the refinery in recent days, following a drone strike on January 31 that also caused a fire. Lukoil facilities have become frequent targets of Ukrainian drone and cyberattacks.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that air defense forces intercepted 70 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions, including Rostov, Volgograd, Astrakhan, Voronezh, Belgorod, and Kursk. In Astrakhan, drones targeted fuel and energy facilities, including a gas processing plant.
As a precaution, six Russian airports temporarily halted flights but resumed operations by morning. Later, three more airports were briefly closed.
The attacks have disrupted Russia's oil industry, which is already under strain with overall refining volumes in 2024 dropping to their lowest levels since 2012.
