A 14-year-old boy has died and four other people were injured in a knife attack in Villach, southern Austria, on Saturday. A 23-year-old Syrian national with legal residence in Austria has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The attack occurred in the city of Villach, and all the victims were male. Two sustained serious injuries, while the other two suffered minor injuries. Police spokesperson Rainer Dionisio stated that the motive remains unknown and that they are investigating the attacker's background.
A 42-year-old delivery driver who witnessed the attack described to local media how he intervened to prevent further harm. Authorities are currently unsure if the suspect acted alone and are continuing their investigation.
The incident has shocked the local community in Villach, which is located near the borders of Italy and Slovenia. Carinthia's Governor, Peter Kaiser, expressed his condolences and emphasized the need for adherence to Austrian laws and values.
Following the attack, Erwin Angerer, a lawmaker from the far-right Freedom Party, criticized the country's asylum policies. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner was scheduled to visit Villach on Sunday.
This tragic event comes shortly after a separate incident in Munich, Germany, where a two-year-old girl and her mother died after a car drove into a crowd.
