In a shocking turn of events, two suspects accused of killing Anambra lawmaker Justice Azuka have escaped from police custody in the state.
The police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, stating that the two suspects were assisting police operatives in an investigation to arrest a receiver of vehicles used by the criminal gang.
The suspects, Kevin Ikechukwu Ossai (aka IKEM) and OCHA, were part of a group arrested in connection with the abduction and murder of Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly. Azuka's body was discovered on February 6 at Second Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State.
According to Ikenga, the two suspects fled the scene during an operation to arrest the receiver of vehicles used by the gang. Despite the escape, the police managed to arrest the receiver and recover two vehicles suspected to have been stolen.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, has deployed resources to re-arrest the escaped suspects and has also ordered disciplinary action against the officers responsible for the escape.
