A stark warning has come from Andrey Melnichenko, a key ally of Vladimir Putin, who cautioned Donald Trump that continued escalation in Ukraine could lead to a "world war". Melnichenko emphasized that Russia would intervene if it perceived the US as exerting excessive influence in the region.
In an interview with Danish newspaper Frihedsbrevet, Melnichenko expressed concerns about the ongoing conflict, labeling it "a tragedy" in the history of both Russia and Ukraine.
Despite this, he remained optimistic that the war could conclude this year if escalation is avoided, potentially culminating in a peace treaty after Ukraine's presidential elections.
Melnichenko's warnings come as Trump recently spoke with Putin about ending the war, with the US president asserting that the conflict would not have occurred if he had been in office in 2022. Trump expressed his desire to expedite a resolution, stating, "I want to end this damn thing".
Meanwhile, preparations for a potential meeting between Trump and Putin are reportedly underway, with Russian lawmaker Leonid Slutsky indicating that discussions are at an "advanced stage".
The meeting, which may take place in February or March, is expected to address pressing issues, including the Ukraine war and global energy prices.³
