Abuja, Nigeria – In a decisive move, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC), led by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagun, has confirmed Sunday Ude-Okoye as the party's substantive National Secretary.
The decision was reached at a meeting on Wednesday where thirteen NWC members voted in favor of Ude-Okoye, while five abstained. Outgoing secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, received no votes and has been removed from the NWC WhatsApp group.
Sources within the party indicate that Anyanwu's actions have caused significant embarrassment to the PDP. He has reportedly been pursuing legal action against the NWC and NEC, with a suit filed by a 2023 Labour Party House of Representatives candidate.
The NWC is now transmitting its decision to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for implementation.
Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, spokesperson for the coalition of opposition lawmakers, welcomed the NWC's decision, stating it demonstrates the PDP's ability to overcome internal crises.
This development follows a previous recognition of Ude-Okoye by the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) last week. The BoT, after reviewing reports on the contested secretary position, urged the NWC to immediately swear Ude-Okoye into office.
The BoT meeting, attended by key party figures like Senator Adolphus Wabara and Senator Ahmed Makarfi, also addressed the party's ongoing leadership crisis and the need for a NEC meeting in March.
The dispute over the National Secretary position has fueled internal divisions within the PDP, with both Ude-Okoye and Anyanwu claiming the office. The NWC's confirmation of Ude-Okoye appears to be a move to resolve this lingering issue.
