A massive pile-up involving approximately 100 vehicles, including cars and trucks, has occurred on Interstate-84 in Oregon near Multnomah Falls.
The "white out" conditions are suspected to be the primary cause of the accident. An SUV caught fire in the chaotic scene, but all occupants were able to escape.
Multiple injuries have been reported, and emergency crews are on site assessing the situation and working to free those trapped in their vehicles.
"There are reports of people stuck inside their vehicles. Responders are making their way through the scene and checking on cars. We advise everyone to stay in their vehicles for their safety unless there is a clear or immediate reason not to," officials stated.
They confirmed the SUV fire and the large number of vehicles involved, emphasizing the challenging "whiteout" conditions.
The Oregon Department of Transportation has announced lengthy closures on I-84 in both directions between La Grande and Baker City, with westbound closures for trucks extending from Ontario to Baker City. Only local traffic is currently permitted.
The closures are due to blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility to less than 500 feet. The department warned of potentially extended closures due to the ongoing weather conditions and advised drivers to plan for delays or seek alternate routes.
Despite the scale of the accident and the hazardous conditions, initial reports indicate no fatalities. Responders are continuing to work through the scene, car by car, attending to the injured and ensuring everyone's safety.
