Dele Farotimi, a lawyer and rights activist, is still entangled in legal battles despite Afe Babalola's withdrawal of his cases against him,
The police had arrested and charged Farotimi with cybercrime offenses and criminal defamation based on Babalola's petition.
However, two new lawsuits filed against him, with damages claims exceeding N1 billion.
Kehinde Ogunwumiju, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, sued Farotimi for alleged defamatory statements in his book, "Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System." Ogunwumiju is seeking N500 million in damages and wants the book's publication and sale halted.
Another lawyer, Ola Faro, from Babalola's law firm, petitioned the Rivers State High Court, alleging that Farotimi defamed him in the same book.
Faro is seeking N500 million in damages for unlawful defamation and N100 million for distributing the book.
Ooni of Ife's Intervention
Following the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other traditional rulers, the police prosecutor applied for the withdrawal of the cybercrime charges against Farotimi. However, another criminal charge filed by the police is still pending, with a hearing scheduled for February 13.
Farotimi's arrest on December 3, 2024, was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer, who stated that Farotimi was undergoing investigation for alleged defamation of character and cyberbullying.
