Toronto, Canada – A Delta Air Lines plane carrying 80 passengers and crew crash-landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, flipping onto its roof and injuring at least 18 people.
The incident occurred around 2:45 pm local time as the Endeavor Air-operated Bombardier CRJ900, flight 4819 from Minneapolis, touched down.
Video footage from the scene showed the aircraft inverted on the snow-covered tarmac, with emergency personnel assisting passengers.
Two adults in critical condition were airlifted to a nearby trauma center, and a child was transported by ambulance to a downtown Toronto hospital. Fifteen other individuals sustained minor injuries. Passengers were evacuated from the wreckage.
John Nelson, a passenger who shared a video of the crash on Facebook, described the suddenness of the event: “We hit the ground, and we were sideways, and then we were upside down.” He later told CNN that there was no indication of trouble before the landing.
Airport fire chief Todd Aitken emphasized the need for careful investigation, stating, “It’s very early on. It’s really important that we do not speculate.” He noted that the runway was dry and there were no crosswind conditions at the time of the crash.
Toronto airport authority chief executive Deborah Flint confirmed that no other aircraft were involved.
Despite a significant snowstorm that impacted eastern Canada on Sunday, airport operations resumed at 5 pm local time following a brief suspension after the incident. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has launched an investigation into the crash, with support from the US National Transportation Safety Board.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed relief that there were no fatalities. The incident follows a series of four fatal crashes in the US in recent weeks.
