At least 5,144 Nigerians are at risk of arrest and deportation from the United States due to President Donald Trump's crackdown on undocumented immigrants.
This number includes 3,690 Nigerians on the non-detained docket with final orders of removal, as well as 1,454 individuals currently in detention.¹
According to data from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), 772 of the detained Nigerians were arrested for criminal convictions or pending charges, while the rest were arrested for immigration violations such as visa overstay.
Additionally, 417 Nigerians were removed as of November 2024, and 884 were removed between 2019 and 2024.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has stated that the Federal Government has set up an inter-agency committee to handle the matter should there be mass deportations of Nigerians from the US.
The committee comprises the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the office of the National Security Adviser.
It's worth noting that President Trump's immigration policy has been criticized for its impact on undocumented immigrants, with many arguing that it leads to unnecessary deportations and family separations.
