South Korean prosecutors have indicted suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol on insurrection charges.
The charges stem from Yoon's brief declaration of martial law in early December, which plunged the country into political turmoil.
Yoon attempted to justify the declaration by accusing the main opposition party of sympathizing with North Korea and engaging in anti-state activities.
The declaration was swiftly overturned by parliament, and Yoon was voted to be impeached. He has been in custody since being arrested last week.
Prosecutors announced the charges on Sunday evening, making Yoon the first sitting president in South Korea's history to be indicted.
Yoon denies wrongdoing, and his party has dismissed the indictment. However, the main opposition Democratic Party welcomed the indictment and urged the court to hold Yoon accountable.
Yoon faces two trials: one over his impeachment case and another for the criminal case of insurrection, which carries a possible life sentence or death penalty.
