Petrol tanker explodes on Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, many feared dead


A fuel tanker explosion occurred on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in Nigeria, resulting in multiple casualties and destruction.

The incident happened at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis when the tanker fell and caught fire around 11:30 am on Saturday.

Eight vehicles were burned, and several people were injured while trying to flee the scene.

The Enugu State Fire Service responded promptly, with a team of 10 firefighters working to extinguish the blaze.

The Director of the Enugu State Fire Service, Okwudili Ohaa, confirmed the incident and stated that the number of fatalities is currently unknown. The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and other security agencies are working to evacuate the bodies of the victims.

Eyewitnesses described the explosion as devastating, with intense heat and smoke hindering initial rescue efforts. Some victims and vehicles were burned beyond recognition.

The fire service has thanked the public for quickly alerting them to the incident, allowing for a swift response.
