At least 70 people have been killed and 19 injured in an attack on the Saudi Teaching Maternal hospital in El Fasher, Sudan, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The hospital, the only functional one in the besieged city, was packed with patients receiving care when the attack occurred.
Local officials have blamed the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for the assault, which is the latest in a series of attacks amidst Sudan's escalating civil war.
The RSF has been fighting the Sudanese military and allied forces since April 2023, resulting in over 28,000 deaths and millions displaced.
The WHO has condemned the attack, calling for a cessation of all attacks on healthcare facilities in Sudan. The organization's director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, emphasized that "Sudan's people need peace. The best medicine is peace."
The attack on the hospital has sparked widespread concern, with Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry denouncing it as "a violation of international law."
The UN has also warned of the devastating impact of the conflict on civilians, particularly in El Fasher, which has been under RSF siege since May 2024.
