The family of Gisele Pelicot, a 72-year-old multiple rape victim, has been severely impacted by the trial that led to her husband's 20-year imprisonment. Dominique Pelicot, also 72, was convicted of aggravated rape for drugging his wife for nearly a decade and allowing numerous men to assault her.
Gisele Pelicot was initially supported by her three adult children when she testified against her husband. However, by the time the verdict was delivered, a deep rift had developed within the family.
According to Gisele's lawyer, Stephane Babonneau, the rift is attributed to the family's only daughter, Caroline Darian, 46. Darian claims she was also drugged and attacked by her father, but no evidence supports this allegation. Darian is angry that her mother has not supported her in her own criminal complaints.
Darian has written a book about her ordeal, expressing her feelings of loss and betrayal. After 51 men, including Dominique Pelicot, were convicted of various crimes, including aggravated rape, the family's plans for a celebration were canceled.
Gisele Pelicot has since divorced her husband, changed her address, and stopped using her married name. Her lawyer stated that she is trying to return to a normal life, but faces challenges due to her newfound public recognition.
Despite the family rift, Gisele's first words after the verdict were for her family, demonstrating her ongoing concern for them. The case has also led to new accusations against Dominique Pelicot, including the alleged sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl in 1995. Pelicot denies all new accusations.
