Aare Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, has withdrawn defamation charges against human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi, following the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other traditional rulers.
The charges stemmed from Farotimi's book, "Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System," where he alleged that Babalola corrupted the judiciary.
However, after a mediation led by the Ooni and other traditional rulers, Babalola decided to drop the charges, citing respect for Yoruba traditional institutions.
Babalola emphasized that he has nothing to gain from Farotimi's imprisonment and that he is happiest when he gives.
The Ooni of Ife expressed gratitude to Babalola for his magnanimity, highlighting the importance of forgiveness in Yoruba culture.
As the Ooni noted, "Dele Farotimi is your son. As elders, when our children offend us, we reprimand them but also forgive them".
This resolution showcases the significant influence of traditional leadership in promoting reconciliation and upholding communal values.
