The Federal Government has announced the suspension of import duties and taxes on essential food items to make basic necessities more affordable for Nigerians and address the deepen issue of hunger in the nation.
The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adeniyi, who made the announcement in a public address on Monday evening, also acknowledged the widespread economic challenges and explained the commitment of the government to ease the financial burden on its citizens.
To address the impact of global inflation in nations worldwide he stated, the federal government, through the Nigeria Customs Service, has moved to suspend import duties and taxes on essential food items to make them more affordable.
As a result, the Nigeria Customs Service has streamlined export processes to facilitate the efficient movement of Nigerian goods to international markets, an initiative that includes the introduction of advanced ruling systems, authorised economic operators, and a time-release study designed to enhance trade, stimulate the economy, and create new opportunities.
“We are committed to implementing this measure seamlessly to address the problem of hunger in our nation.
“In these challenging times, let us unite in resilience and cooperation. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those who have embraced the path of peace and dialogue,” he said.
Adeniyi however, called for constructive engagement and cooperation from all Nigerians to overcome current challenges and build a brighter future.
