A total of 76 persons has so far been arrested and arraigned by the Lagos State government for allegedly shunning pedestrian bridges in Ojota, Ladipo and Oshodi areas of the state.
Tokunbo Wahab, the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources in the State made the disclosure in a post on X on Monday.
"Seventy-six persons were apprehended today at Ojota, Ladipo and Oshodi for not using the pedestrian bridge. They have been charged to court for prosecution," Wahab wrote.
The ministry had recently described the crossing of major highways in the state by pedestrians as an offence and warned residents against shunning pedestrian bridges.
In late March, 63 individuals across various locations were arrested by the operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps for crossing the highway without using the pedestrian bridges and for engaging in street trading.
In another development, the commissioner disclosed on Monday that despite several meetings with the owners of properties built on the drainage channel along System 1 midstream – Odo Iyalaro – Ojota – Ogudu channel, “the property owners ignored several notices served and kept building on the drainage.”
Following this, the commissioner said the Monitoring Enforcement and Compliance Department of the ministry began the removal of illegal properties to allow for the free flow of rainwater in the area.
