President Tinubu’s administration has announced its intention to support local companies by engaging them in the production of the Nigerian passport, the PUNCH reported.
The intended engagement aligns with the administration’s vision of promoting indigenous businesses and reducing dependence on foreign entities.
Through the local engagement of manufacturers, the government seeks to stimulate economic development, create job opportunities, and enhance technological capabilities within the country.
According to the report, transitioning passport production to local companies will contribute to the growth of local industries and strengthen Nigeria’s position as a self-sufficient nation. And importantly, the government can redirect funds that would have otherwise been spent abroad back into the domestic economy.
Furthermore, with domestic companies handling the manufacturing process, there is potential for improved quality control and faster turnaround times, ultimately benefiting Nigerian citizens applying for passports, streamlining the process of passport production, and making it more efficient and cost-effective.
Beyond the economic implications, the initiative holds symbolic significance for Nigeria’s sovereignty and national pride. By taking control of the production of essential documents such as passport, the government reaffirms its commitment to asserting Nigeria’s identity and autonomy on the global stage.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior, under the leadership of Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has commenced discussions with Nigerian companies regarding the localisation of passport production.
As discussions progress between the Ministry of Interior and local companies, stakeholders are optimistic about the potential outcomes of this initiative.
